James “Jim” Tillett

I am a Licensed Resident in Marriage and Family Therapy in Virginia with several years of experience practicing in the field of Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT). Currently, I am also a doctoral candidate in the MFT program at Virginia Tech.

I specialize in teletherapy for neurodivergent, queer, and gender diverse people (and am proudly autistic, ADHD, queer, and trans myself). I work with clients both individually and relationally (i.e., as partners, families, etc.). It is my passion to help clients live in a way that feels congruent to them, and to support and be present with one another in the process.

As people, I believe that having our authentic selves reflected back to us provides the nourishment, courage, and enthusiasm we need to move forward and feel fulfilled in life. Therefore, my goal is to understand how clients make meaning of their identities and experiences, and to attune to them using validation, empathy, and authentic engagement.

My therapeutic approach comes from various MFT approaches such as collaborative (language systems), narrative, and experiential therapies. This means that I will bring my whole self into therapy, feeling like another full person in sessions rather than a distant observer or questioner. Additionally, I draw a great deal of inspiration from the intrinsic motivation of clients and their expertise within their own lives. In other words, your interests and perspectives are deeply important to me!

I am excited to learn more about you and join your support network.
